Monsoon is a beautiful motorised tradional dhow officially launched in October 2004. She is the first of her kind to be built in Shimoni and is a great achievement for the area. Monsoon is built from wood available in the area; the deck and bodywork from Teak, the ribs from Mangrove, the keel from African Cedar and the mast from mahogany. She was put together totally by hand by local workmen and took 10 months to complete.
Monsoon is well equipped with a four cylinder oil cooled 65hp Vetus engine. There is a GPS with a fish finder, depth sounder and card plotter, electric flushing toilet (which has three different flushes!) with an internal septic tank, rain canopy, sun cover, and sail.
Monsoon is also equipped with new snorkelling equipment that includes masks, snorkels, fins and also new life jackets designed for comfort. For the tired snorkeller to rest on the journey back Monsoon is the only boat with a specially built sun deck which can be converted to a dive rack for the serious divers.
Monsoon boasts well qualified crew that include captain Hassan and snorkelling guide Mohammed who have been with the company for 15 and 12 years respectively.. |
